Advancing Healthcare Accessibility through 3D Printing: An Internship Experience

\We are excited to share a remarkable internship experience from our student, Lieve McGee, who recently completed a ten-week project at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Kenya. This internship, part of her master's in BioMechanical Design, focused on enhancing healthcare accessibility through innovative 3D printing technology.

Hands-On Projects in Biomedical and Orthopaedics Departments

During her time at MTRH, Lieve collaborated with fellow students from TU Delft to strengthen a 3D printing project within the biomedical engineering department. Together, they successfully designed and 3D printed spare parts for hospital equipment that would have otherwise been unusable.

In addition to this, the team initiated a 3D printing project in the orthopaedics department, where they worked closely with staff to develop a range of orthopaedic splints. These splints can be designed and produced on-site, significantly improving the efficiency of care.
Empowering Local Staff through Training

A key component of Lieve's internship was providing CAD training to the Orthopaedic staff and students at MTRH. This training not only imparted valuable skills for designing their own products but also fostered a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency in the hospital.

This internship has provided Lieve with invaluable professional and personal experiences, and she is excited to see how the projects will continue to develop.
